TunnelVision

December 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

This is a peculiar 7″ from 1976. I don’t know a thing about it, and an internet search yielded no information. Side A is a parody newscast that is frighteningly accurate, considering the time it was made (Exxon oil spills, a pregnant man). Side B is the TunnelVision theme. If you know anything about this please get in touch. If not, enjoy “the best TV on TV!” (but hey, enough with the Polish jokes already!)

Selmanaires’ Aphorisms

November 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

  • Hidden ash is a larger and much better film.
  • Hidden borders admit the deadliest dancers.
  • Friendly deaths ease back tensions.
  • You cook just to eat the grill.
  • Heaven is only a boiled election.
  • Unhappiness is the author of fantastic airplanes.
  • Pebbles turn into waterfalls.
  • The public hemline moves so casually that a guide to the golden game is useless.

TT Two

November 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Two aspects working together in a song:

TEMPO, rhythm, repetition: The elevation of the mundane by the use of markers in time. By taking possession of time it stands still and becomes bulbous. resonant. radiant.

TEMPORAL, transient, narrative: without the temporal events that occur on top, below, inside, and throughout the rhythm/tempo, it would sooner or later become mundane itself. A bird sings, a car passes, a plate breaks. Trances fluctuate and everybody loves a good story.

The tempo without the temporal becomes an exercise in will.

The temporal without the tempo becomes an eye gazing only at itself.

All tempo is temporal, and when we look back we see that the temporal itself has a tempo.

Sonchai Mekhwichian

November 13, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Sonchai MekhwichianToday we bring you songs by the Thai singer SONCHAI MEKHWICHIAN from his album On Chan. Powerful, driving tunes mixed with pretty ballads. My favorites are ”Siang So Sang Sao” and “Sao Yu Ban Dai.” Sonchai has a very nice voice, in a higher register like that of a songbird. A very special thanks to Peter who writes the MONRAKPLENGTHAI blog for his generous assistance in transliteration of the name and titles of the cassette. Check out his attractive and informative blog.

TEMPO TEMPORAL

Our new album is finally ready!  Six songs, thirty minutes: Tempo Temporal. To celebrate we’re giving away a song for download. It’s called Resonance Alright and it’s one of our favorites. Click below:

RESONANCE ALRIGHT

You can hear the entire release on our Myspace page or get one from us in person if we’re coming through your town in the coming weeks.

A few people have really gone the extra mile to help us make this self-release possible with our limited means. Mike Wright engineered five of the six songs, threw in great ideas and let us eat all of his sunflower seeds. We recorded them at New Street Studio where our practice space shares a roof with his studio and the practice space of the Black Lips. We are working on a cosmic hotspot (made entirely of cables and cigarette butts). Graham Marsh mixed four of the songs and recorded one of them at his studio behind the Crue-famous Tattletales and the bleach soaked private rooms of Cheshire Bridge Road. Jaguzzi?! It was our first time working with him and it was a blast. Graham is the master of addition-by-subtraction and many of the little things he did greatly enhanced the songs. Deisha Oliver came by and threw on some outrageous noise for a few songs with her cello. Leticia Arioli duets on Dials and really knocked us out with her sweet voice. And we were lucky enough to be in the studio when Miss Adron returned to the A after her stint in NYC. All we had to do is hit record on Resonance Alright and she knew exactly what to do, in perfect pitch. We are very lucky to have such talented and helpful friends. Thanks ya’ll.

And a very special thanks to beautiful Julia Kubica for helping me focus & get all the files together & tie up all loose ends. Couldn’t do it without you.

Smoke & Mirrors pt. 1

September 22, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I love the process of recording. Though it may be incredibly time-consuming, mind-numbing and occasionally maddening, I love it. As we approach the final days of mixing our new release, however, the time has come for perhaps my least favorite part of this process: affixing the image into its final form.

During the various stages of tracking and overdubbing there are numerous surprises, discoveries and exhilarating moments when the little song you’ve helped create becomes a concrete entity, assuming forms and dimensions you’ve always wished for it. The air is charged with POTENTIAL.  When the time comes to set your work into stone, chiseling away at its details, balancing the elements…a little terror wells up inside of me. What was once wild, unruly and full of life now becomes subdued and slightly deadened. Whether or not this photograph (which it is essentially, in aural form) exceeds or fails one’s expectation, one cannot help but match it with the intricate mental image created over time and compare the two: “Is this it?”

It becomes impossible not to backslide into the spiraling labyrinth of subjectivity where blemishes appear bloated and monstrous, lurching to fore, while beloved nuances fall away in sacrifice to the whole. You find that an idea that was once only an abstract rattle in your brain is now slipping from your fingers before your very eyes. Will your baby grow up to be an accountant or a serial killer? Are either of those things desirable? Will it be the cause of pride or grief?

I can see a parallel to the Amish idea that being photographed steals a bit of your soul. The life of a song continues despite being captured, though always in relation to its picture. This is especially true in this technological age when the majority of our contact with music is through recordings.

Perhaps this is a problem of approach? Perhaps it is the nature of the beast? Ego? That must be in there somewhere. Maybe now all we do is create texts/ talismen that never change, while performance is left to the listener?

Yes, but I still love it. And I still am bristling with excitement over our new recordings, something I’ve tried to be terribly cynical about, to no avail.

Oh my children, I have such a hard time accepting that intention is meaningless!

The Soul of Sinn Sisamouth

September 11, 2009 · Leave a Comment

sisamuth_01-1

Today, my friends, we bring to you the music of the Cambodian singer Sinn Sisamouth (seen alternately spelled as Sin, Sim and Sisamuth), with 17 songs compiled from various cassettes purchased during a trip to Cambodia last year. He is one of my favorite singers on the planet and the tone, articulation and emotional qualities of his voice are full of nuance and grace. Click below.

THE SOUL OF SINN SISAMOUTH

Many of the songs on this compilation are duets, and the singers that Mr. Sisamouth sang with frequently are Ros Sereysothea and Pan Ron. Be sure to check out the best cover of “Hard Day’s Night” ever (track 7)! For more information on the life & music of Sinn Sisamouth click here.

Here are some sites where you can purchase more Sinn Sisamouth & great Cambodian music at very reasonable prices:

Khmer Musicsinn

Khmer Rocks

The volume and quality of these recordings change from song-to-song. Sometimes the sound is just bad, but the great music makes up for it. All of the cassettes are in the Khmer language, so I apologize for lack of song titles. I love this music, so school me. If I’ve accidentally attributed a song to the wrong singer please let me know. All I have to go by are album photos sisamouth_colorand my Western ears.

Erol Evgin

This is the first of many posts we will be bringing you of rare or unusual vinyl downloads from our record collections. Today we have a Turkish single from Erol Evgin. Soaring strings, wah-wah, and spacious vocals. No date to be found but I’m guessing mid-70’s (?).
